Buying a new instrument is one of the most important musical decisions you will make. A new instrument is necessary when a student has learned all 12 major scales and has advanced past an intermediate level. Make sure that you buy a quality instrument with which you can continue to grow musically. I have made suggestions of quality, respected brands and models, but please, research your future purchase carefully and thoroughly. A "step-up" flute should have the following things: Solid Silver Headjoint- This is the most important part of the flute! The sound is produced in the headjoint, therefore the better the material, the better the sound. Open hole (french model)- A must have. Serious flute players almost always have open hole flutes. Open holes also make some special fingerings possible. B footjoint- A must have. This is an extra key at the end of the flute that allows the student to play an additional low note. It also greatly improves intonation in the high register. Offset G key- Strongly suggested. This option allows for a more natural left hand position by moving the 3rd finger key about half of an inch to the left. It has no impact on the sound of the instrument but makes covering the open holes much easier. The following things make a step-up flute even better: Hand cut, solid silver headjoint- This means that a person, not a machiene, made the heajoint. Solid silver body and footjoint- The additional silver will improve the sound even more. Gold or white gold springs- This provides quicker and lighter key response and action.
